Our Summer Sleepover experience is aimed at getting families with children introduced to the rewarding world of animal fostering. Many LCHS foster families have children who are every bit involved in the fostering process. From the fun yet important role that socialization plays to tasks such as feeding, scooping litter boxes, and walking the foster pup; families with kids from toddlers to teens have the ability to save lives!

We’ll work with you to decipher what foster pet(s) will do best in your household (kittens or puppies, sick cats in need of a place to crash while overcoming a kitty cold, playful adult dogs, senior foster pets, etc.). Fostering can last from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the animal. LCHS provides the necessary resources such as medical care, food, litter, toys, and a kennel; while foster families provide a safe and loving environment, socialization, transportation to veterinary appointments, and lots of TLC. For those in need of volunteer hours, LCHS will award 4 hours of community service per day.

Common reasons people give for not fostering:
1) “I’ll get too attached.”
You will get attached, we all do! You may even cry when your foster pet gets adopted. But, there is no better reward than helping connect a pet that you’ve played a heavy role in saving with a family of their own. You’ll help match that animal with the most appropriate home and you’ll often receive updates from the adoptive family.
The best way to heal your heart after saying goodbye is by opening up your heart and your home to another foster pet. And don’t underestimate your child; when they have the opportunity to save a life, they get it! Plus, if you do fall in love and you can’t fathom being apart, foster families have the first right to adopt their foster pet.

2) “My pet wouldn’t allow it”
In many cases, a spare bathroom or bedroom is all you need. When it comes to infant kittens or puppies that aren’t yet mobile, or a sick cat in need of a quiet place to rest, free roam of your home and access to other pets is not necessary. Talk to us about your pets and let’s see if fostering might work in your home.

3) “I’m not home enough”
Remember, many of the animals entering our care are transferred from overcrowded quarters in a shelter environment where they risk euthanasia. If moving from a loud and stressful environment to a structured routine in a home is their option, we’re betting they’d all take it! Most of our foster families work or attend school full time. While your schedule may not allow for around the clock bottle feedings, it will work for many animals in need for a loving advocate. Remember, this is just a temporary stop on their road to adoption.
