Finding a kitten or kittens can get your heart racing, but don’t kit-nap the kittens without assessing the situation! Kittens require a lot of hands-on care that is very difficult to provide, making their lives more vulnerable in a rescue environment than with mom. Being with mom is their best chance at survival!
We also want to avoid taking kittens but leaving mom outside to have litter after litter.
Use this to determine what age range your kitten is, make sure they’re not in immediate danger (in a road or parking lot,) and make a plan to save kittens AND mom! If the kittens are dry, plump, and safe, leave them be! If it’s a single kitten, mom may be in the process of moving her litter somewhere safe, so if you move them without watching to see if she comes back, she’ll start frantically looking for them.
If they’re wet, have bugs (maggots) on them, or are in immediate danger, then you can move them. Otherwise, you may hurt their chances of survival even though you mean to save them.
